INTERNAL GEOLOGY

Artists: Afonso Borragán & Martin Howse

Description:
What happens when we perceive the human body as geological?
Artists Afonso Borragán and Martin Howse explore the encounter between body and minerals through ingestion, crystallisation, and transformation.

Their ongoing research investigates body stones — accelerated crystallisations, brutal exo-formations, and the animism of bezoars — as a way to rethink our relationship with the earth and cosmos.

Through sound, image, and conversation, this presentation opens a space to imagine new forms of living, digesting, and dying within planetary cycles.

Together with artists alfonso borragán and Martin Howse, we will explore some projects about the encounter between the human body and the geological through ingestion or the gestation of minerals inside the body.

alfonso borragán is an interdisciplinary artist. His work explores and activates relational processes, physical and metaphysical, with the earth, usually though collective processes and collective actions. He tries to channel an experience, building situations and devices that are born to be consumed and that try to modify the perception of reality, interfere or expand it. During the last 13 years he has been developing a large project about the human ingestion of stones called Litofagos.

Martin Howse is an artist/programmer and theorist. His work spans the fields of computing programming, writing, education and performance and he is occupied with an artistic, interdisciplinary investigation of the links between the earth, software and the human psyche. He has pioneered numerous open-laboratory style projects and performed, workshopped, lectured and exhibited in galleries, venues and festivals across Europe, North and South America.

Borragán and Howse will moreover discuss several projects about the geological trans-becoming, a new relation of the human with the earth and with the cosmos, invoking becoming metal, becoming earth as potential and multiple ways of being and as active philosophies of the earth; a guide for how to live and die within new planetary and cosmic techno-cycles.

These public sessions will take place at AiR 351 Cascais, CAC Torres Vedras and Mira Forum, Oporto.

The residency is in partnership with Mira Forum and CAC / Torres Vedras.
