Musa paradisiaca is an artistic duo composed of Eduardo Guerra and Miguel Ferrão, both from Lisbon and born in 1986. Since its formation in 2010, the duo has explored various forms of artistic expression, including sculptures, films, drawings, paintings and performative actions. Their work emphasizes the importance of orality and dialogue, manifesting the tension between individual expression, represented by the “author,” and collectivity. Musa paradisiaca usually integrates different perspectives and skills from a variety of entities, practitioners, experts, and references, both collective and individual, in an evolving collaborative process.
Exhibitions by Musa paradisiaca have been displayed in several institutions in Portugal, such as the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the Serralves Foundation, and the MAAT. Internationally, the duo has showcased their work at venues including Frac Pays de La Loire in Nantes, Horanggasy Artpolygon in Gwangju, Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin, Fondation d’entreprise Pernod Ricard in Paris, and Whitechapel Gallery in London.
In addition to exhibitions, Musa paradisiaca has participated in various artist residencies and has works in collections of relevant institutions. The duo’s practice is characterized by ongoing dialogue and collaboration, resulting in an inclusive and multidisciplinary approach that challenges traditional conventions of contemporary art.
During their residency, the artists will be immersed in the context of the Carnival, researching its impact on local society and reflecting on its relevance in the contemporary context. Based on this research, rooted in Torres Vedras, they will develop new sculptural works that engage with that theme and aesthetics, incorporating elements of social critique and exploring the expressive potential of materials.
